Easy Breezy Market Tote Crochet Pattern

It's summer in Colorado finally, and every year I get the urge to start crocheting market bags and reusable grocery bags... Well, here's the first one of this season– the Easy Breezy Market Tote Crochet Pattern.

This is a great beginner crochet pattern, but fun for all crocheters. This bag is made with 100% cotton fiber and can hold so much! Since this is a beginner crochet pattern, the only crochet stitches you need to know for this pattern are the single and double crochet stitches.

finished size: 11" wide, 13" tall, 20" long straps end to end

Materials Needed

Worsted weight cotton yarn
Size I hook (5.50 mm)
Tape measure
Tapestry needle
Scissors

Abbreviations

slst - slip stitch

ch - chain

sc - single crochet

dc - double crochet

sk - skip

sp - space

st(s) - stitch(es)

rep - repeat

* * - repeat anything in asterisks

Pattern Notes

To make this bag I used Lily Sugar 'n Cream yarn in White. This yarn is 100% cotton–I highly recommend using a yarn fiber that is mostly cotton. I have found that cotton yarns hold up the longest and are the more sturdy option for market bags. Cotton yarns will also help your bag maintain its shape so it doesn't stretch out as much over time.

This pattern is worked in the round. Each round ends with a slip stitch to the first stitch in the round unless otherwise noted. The straps are worked separately and are attached at the end.

Pattern

The Bag

Foundation Chain: ch 39

Round 1: sc in the 2nd chain from the hook (check out the reference photo below), sc 36 back across your foundation chain, in the last ch 2sc, (instead of turning, continue to crochet around the back side of your foundation chain to create a round), sc 36 and end the round with a sc in the same st as your beginning sc. You should now have a really long oval-shaped round. slst to the first sc of the round to end the first round. (76)

Pro Tip: At the end of each row in parenthesis is the number of stitches you should have in that row.

Round 2: ch 1, sc in next stitch and in each st around, slst to first sc (76)

Round 3-5: rep round 2

Round 6: ch 3 (this counts as your beg dc and ch 1), sk 1 st, rep *dc, ch 1, sk 1 st* around, slst to the 2nd ch from your beg ch 3. You should have 38 ch 1 spaces (76)

Round 7: slst to ch 1 sp from the previous round, ch 3 (this counts as your beg dc and ch 1), dc into next ch 1 sp, ch 1, rep *dc in ch 1 sp, ch 1* around, slst to the 2nd ch from your beg ch 3. (76)

Round 8-23: rep round 7

Round 24: ch 1, sc around (crochet at the top of each dc and in each ch 1 sp), slst to 1st sc. (76)

Round 25: ch 1, sc around. (76)

Round 26-27: rep round 25

After round 27, tie off and weave in your ends, we will now move on to the straps.

The Straps

You will repeat this portion once so that you have two finished straps. Once each strap is complete, follow the instructions to attach them.

Foundation Chain: ch 3

Row 1: ch 1, turn, sc 2 (2)

Row 2-60: rep row 1

Your strap should now be approximately 20 inches long, if yours needs a few more rows, go ahead and add them until the total strap length is 20 inches.

Round 1: You will now work single crochets around the entire strap to give the strap a more polished look. 2sc in each corner and once you make your way around, slst to the first sc.
